Elgin Community College student Angel Alvarez was surprised by how many resources and opportunities ECC offers. After graduating from Hampshire High School in 2019, Alvarez went to the University of Chicago-Illinois to study neuroscience. After hitting a few bumps in the road, Alvarez came to ECC to get his associate in science and plans on transferring to continue studying neuroscience. “I am really interested in doing something in the science research field, like studying dreams and the subconscious,” Alvarez said.

Starting at ECC in January 2025, Alvarez credits his academic advisor, Ashley Letteney, with some of his success. “She helped me a lot. She pushed me in the right direction and recommended some great extracurricular activities.”

“So many doors have opened for me since I came to ECC. I see how important it is now,” Alvarez said. Embracing the opportunities available, he actively participates in extracurriculars, including the Honors Program, and is considering joining Phi Theta Kappa (PTK).

Read more about this dream decoder to be below!

What is one thing you do outside of ECC? I like rock climbing, I started climbing at UIC. I just got a membership to First Ascent.

What is one of your study hack or habits? I have learned that writing down notes in class and then reviewing the notes when I get home and applying them to the practice prompts is really what helps me.

What is one thing that really makes your day? Sometimes I make a schedule for myself with checkboxes for the things I need to do. Checking those boxes off makes me feel great.

What did you want to be growing up? I wanted to be a crazy scientist, like the ones on tv that were blowing things up and making potions.

What is your favorite thing to cook or eat out? I don’t really cook, but I really like Portillo’s. I will go there twice a week. I always get two breaded chicken sandwiches and fries.

What is your favorite spot on campus? Jobe Lounge, there are always activities happening in there.

What advice do you have for new ECC students? Be on top of your work while having time for yourself and take advantage of the resources. They will help you get ahead.
