Justis Santos spent almost seven years as a Certified Nursing Assistant before discovering a passion for physical therapy. After shadowing and assisting physical and occupational therapists at the hospital where he worked and spending a summer shadowing his uncle, a physical therapist, Santos decided to head back to school.

The Hanover Park native moved to Elgin without realizing that Elgin Community College was right in his backyard. “I thought I would try it, but it has been so great. This college is so community-based,” Santos said.

After completing the prerequisites required, Santos applied to the Physical Therapy Assistant program and anticipates graduation in May of 2026. “I really love it here, the teachers are great, and my classmates are awesome.”

Learn a bit more about this active assistant to be below.

What is one thing you do outside of ECC? I love to go fishing either around here or in Kenosha. I love camping too, anything outdoors. I once caught a 20 lb. steelhead right off the harbor in Kenosha.

What is a study hack or habit? My desk at home is in the basement, so it is cold and dark. I like to have ambient music playing, with an oil diffuser going. It really sets the mood to lock in.

What is your favorite meal to cook or eat out? Chicken adobo, a Filipino staple.

What is your favorite spot on campus? The cafeteria because the food is good. The chicken tenders are it.

What is something that surprised you about ECC? How much support they give to the students, in general. This is a safe space for everyone.

Would you like to give a shout out to an ECC staff, faculty, or peer? Yes! Kim Traver, Barbara Ostrowska, and my classmates.

Do you have any advice for new students? Enjoy the moment and love it all.
